Heather Sunderman has been a lawyer since 2003 when she was first admitted to practice in Maryland. Her practice has focused on family law, and she has negotiated and litigated cases including divorce, domestic violence protective orders, alimony, property distribution, child custody and child support. She also has experience in estate planning and immigration matters. Heather was selected twice for Maryland SuperLawyers Rising Stars in 2013 and 2014. She is trained in mediation, collaborative law and as an attorney to represent children in high conflict custody cases. She has testified before the Child Custody Decision Making Commission.
She graduated cum laude from the American University Washington College of Law in 2003 and received her undergraduate degree from Allegheny College in 2000. Heather worked for the United States Coast Guard as an intern conducting legal research and drafting briefs and motions. She later worked as an Associate for the firm of Lynne Zusman & Associates in the areas of family, employment and business law before opening her own solo practice in 2004. She later was a managing partner with the Law Office of Maribel LaFontaine.

• Successfully negotiated divorce settlement allowing the client to retain the majority of retirement assets
• Representing client accused of marriage fraud in obtaining divorce
• Modifying court order to award client sole legal custody
• Advising and drafting Qualified Domestic Relations Orders to transfer retirement interest in divorce
Heather is originally from the Pittsburgh area and lives in Montgomery County with her husband and daughter. She enjoys reading, tennis and swimming. She is also a member of the Bar Association of Montgomery County. Heather is admitted to practice law in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
